Neuropsychology explores the relationship between brain function and behaviour and cognition (thinking skills).
Neuropsychological assessment of children aims to identify strengths and weaknesses in different areas of cognition, through interview with parents/carers as well as through tailored cognitive testing. A neuropsychological assessment is therefore different to an assessment by a Clinical Psychologist, who specialises in evaluation of mental health problems.
Appropriate referrals involve issues/concerns around the following:
- Neurodevelopmental disorders
- Autism
- Language difficulties
- ADHD
- Intellectual disability
- Learning disorders
- Epilepsy and other neurological conditions
- Traumatic brain injury
- Behaviour problems (not explained by psychological evaluation)
- Giftedness
